Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring compound found in every tissue of the body. Also called Hyaluronan and occurs naturally in the human body, about 50% is present in the skin (in the deepest layer called the dermis, and the top layer called the epidermis), with high concentrations in the synovial fluid (synovial fluid) and the connectors. There is also the vitreous (vitreous humour-fluid of the eye).
The effect of HA on the skin due to its ability to hold water is "locked" on the skin. This linking cells in the skin is a material called Extra-cellular matrix- ECM (extracellular sheath or intercellular substance). This consists of structural proteins such as collagen and elastin and also other elements such as hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid keeps 1000 times its weight in water, however, the natural supply decreases as we age. Hyaluronic acid plays an important role in the conservation of water in the body, water molecules bind to tissue. Thus, it is a vital, natural ingredient for moisture retention in the skin. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (80,000 daltons), are more digestible than the high molecular weight. The antioxidant vitamins C, acts on free radicals that accelerate aging and is essential for skin health. Contributes to the generation of collagen, which is the primary component of the skin.
