The Theanine is an amino acid, and can cross the blood-brain barrier. It has been found to aid the production of alpha waves in the brain, associated with the "relaxed alertness" and general good mood.
The Theanini supports important neurotransmitters in the brain, essential for normal brain and nerve function. The theanine is found mainly in green tea. More technically, the L-Theanine (Gamma-ethylamino-L-glutamic acid), is a non-protein amino acid found almost exclusively in tea (especially green, black and oolong varieties and pekoe). The other source is called a mushroom Boletus (former Xerocomus) badius. Responsible for the unique, refreshing taste of green tea (which is called in Japan "umami"), scientific studies have shown that irritates the alpha brain waves that are responsible for the condition known as "stimulating resting" (i.e., relaxed but not sleepy).
A cup of tea contains about the same amount of caffeine in coffee, but the sense of relaxation that causes the tea is completely contrary to the stimulant causing a cup of strong coffee.
