The Red Yeast Rice is a natural product used in traditional botanical system in Asia for centuries.

Produced by the fermentation of red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) on white rice.

It contains several compounds known as monacolins, substances known to inhibit cholesterol synthesis.

One of them, «monacolin K», is a potent inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, and is also known as mevinolin or lovastatin.

The HMG-CoA reductase is a polytopiki, transmembrane protein that catalyzes a key step in the mevalonate pathway which is involved in the synthesis of sterols, isoprenoids and other lipids.

In humans, HMG-CoA reductase acts as a regulator of cholesterol synthesis rate.

To Red Yeast Rice blocking HMG-CoA reductase (the body needs to synthesize cholesterol) and lowers the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
