Periodontal disease is inflammation caused by bacteria penetrating the tissues around the teeth. Initially, it manifests as gingivitis and then progresses to periodontitis in an initial or advanced stage.

Combined with certain symptoms that exacerbate sensitivity (teeth grinding, brushing teeth forcefully with a hard toothbrush, consuming food containing vinegar and lemon), all these can erode tooth enamel and expose dentin to external stimuli such as cold, hot, and pressure.
