Lysine is an amino acid that accumulates in muscle tissue and contributes to the absorption of calcium from the intestinal tract, collagen formation and the promotion of bone growth. Lysine has also been used to prevent and treat herpes simplex infections. Lysine along with high doses of vitamin C has been suggested by Dr. Linus Pauling as a medicine for heart disease, as it reduces Lp (a) [lipoprotein (s)] that causes atherosclerosis.
Research has shown that treatment with L-lysine and L-arginine is useful and probably even better than the arginine-ornithine combination for stimulating growth hormone, muscle building, immune system enhancement and weight loss. A dose of 500 mg twice daily or 1000 to 1500 mg taken before the spraying of each amino acid helps these functions.
Lysine deficiency can lead to anemia, enzyme disorders, red eyes, hair loss, inability to concentrate, energy loss, irritability, decreased appetite, reproductive system diseases, weight loss and delayed development.
