Cascara Sagrada is Spanish for "sacred bark". It is an herb derived from the bark of the buckthorn tree American, which has been used by Native Americans for a long time. The dust created by the shell that acts as a powerful purgative and is believed to strengthen the walls of the colon.
The Cascara Sagrada is composed of compounds called anthroquinones. Are these anthroquinones acting as a laxative in humans, because they cause peristalsis, which is the scientific term for inducing contractions in the intestines and colon. These contractions give impetus to the activation of the intestines. This also contains Cascara Sagrada and Aloe Emodin-eomin, covering and reinforcing the walls of the digestive system, and certain other non-harmful ingredients that have a laxative effect.
Other notable components of cascara sagrada are hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides called cascarosides (A, B, C and D which represent approximately 70% of the total with other glycosides in low concentrations) and have laxative effects.
Other important components include resins, tannins and lipids, which make up the majority of the other ingredients in the crust. Together with these properties the cascara is also considered to improve the tone of the muscle wall of the colon.
The herb also stimulates the secretion of metals and releases lubricating fluid in the colon. These liquids soothe and strengthen the walls of the bowel and slow the absorption of vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream.
