Cascara Sagrada is Spanish for "sacred bark". It is an herb derived from the bark of the buckthorn tree American, which has been used by Native Americans for a long time. The dust created by the shell that acts as a powerful purgative and is believed to strengthen the walls of the colon.

The Cascara Sagrada is composed of compounds called anthroquinones. Are these anthroquinones acting as a laxative in humans, because they cause peristalsis, which is the scientific term for inducing contractions in the intestines and colon.
